A chip, gap or dark tooth
A veneer can change the shape or colour of a front tooth that whitening and bonding will not fix.

Enough healthy enamel
Porcelain needs a thin layer of enamel to bond to. If the tooth is very worn or heavily filled, a crown is the stronger choice.

Healthy gums first
Gum disease and decay are treated before any veneer is made. A veneer on an unhealthy tooth fails early.

You can live with the preparation
Most porcelain veneers need a small amount of enamel removed. That step is not reversible. Bonding is the option when you want to keep more tooth.

Consultation
We examine the teeth, gums and bite, and say whether a veneer, bonding or whitening is the better fit. A new-patient consultation is £65.

Plan and shade
You see the shape and shade before anything is prepared. Whitening, if you want it, happens first, because porcelain cannot be whitened later.

Preparation
Where a veneer is still the right choice, a thin layer of enamel is shaped under local anaesthetic and records are sent to the laboratory.

Fit
We check the fit and the colour with you, then bond the veneer. You leave with written advice on floss, grinding and what to do if it comes loose.

Each option does a different job. The right one depends on the tooth, not on a preference for porcelain. Your dentist will help you weigh up the most suitable approach for your teeth, lifestyle and goals.

Will it hurt?

Preparation
Local anaesthetic numbs the tooth. You should feel pressure and vibration, not sharp pain. Tell us if you do.

Afterwards
The tooth can be sensitive to cold for a few days. That usually settles. Ordinary pain relief is enough for most people.

If you are nervous
Say so at the consultation. Longer appointments and a stop signal are available. Sedation is a separate decision, and it is not included in the veneer fee.
Recovery and warning signs

First 24 hours
The bite can feel different. Eat on the other side and avoid very hard food. Call us the same day if the veneer feels high.

First week
Sensitivity to cold is common and should be fading. Floss as we showed you. Do not use the tooth to bite nails, pens or ice.

Call us if
The veneer is loose, cracked, or has come off. Keep it safe and bring it with you. Also call if pain is getting worse after two days, or the gum beside the tooth swells.
Risks to weigh up

Irreversible preparation
Enamel that is removed does not grow back. If a veneer fails years later, the tooth usually needs another veneer or a crown.

Chips and debonds
Grinding, nail biting and a heavy bite are the usual reasons a veneer chips or comes off. A night guard is recommended when you clench.

Gum edge
A veneer that is over-contoured can trap plaque. We check the gum at review visits. Smoking and skipped hygiene shorten the life of the result.

Shade mismatch
Porcelain does not whiten. Natural teeth that darken later will no longer match. Whiten first if you want a lighter shade.

Treatment is usually comfortable. Local anaesthetic can be used during tooth preparation where needed, and your dentist will check that you are comfortable throughout each appointment.
Yes. A single veneer can be an excellent solution for one discoloured, chipped or unusually shaped front tooth. The ceramic is colour-matched carefully to blend with the surrounding teeth.
Veneers are custom-made porcelain shells, usually fitted over two or three appointments. Composite bonding is tooth-coloured resin shaped directly on the tooth, often in one visit. Bonding is generally more conservative and less expensive; porcelain is typically more stain-resistant and longer-lasting.
No. Porcelain does not respond to whitening gel. If you are considering whitening your natural teeth, it is usually best to do that before your veneers are colour-matched and made.
Porcelain veneers start from £850 per tooth. The total depends on the number of teeth being treated and the complexity of the case. After your consultation, we provide a written treatment plan and itemised estimate before any treatment begins.
Grinding is a common reason veneers chip. If you clench, we talk about a night guard before the veneers are made. A guard is a separate fee and is not included in the per-tooth veneer price.
Keep the veneer, do not try to glue it back, and call us. We can often re-bond it if the veneer and the tooth are intact.
