Is removal the right decision?
When to remove
Remove a wisdom tooth that has repeated infection, decay you cannot clean, a cyst, or is damaging the molar in front.
When to leave it
Leave a wisdom tooth that is healthy, erupted enough to clean, and not hurting. We will say so.
Close to the nerve
A lower wisdom tooth that sits close to the nerve needs a careful look at the X-ray, and sometimes a CBCT scan (£125), before anyone books surgery.
Will removal hurt?
Local anaesthetic
The tooth is numbed with local anaesthetic. You feel pressure and pushing, not sharp pain. Surgical teeth need a small cut in the gum and sometimes a little bone removed.
Sedation
Sedation is discussed separately, where it is clinically appropriate, and it is not part of the extraction fee.
Numbness afterwards
Numbness of the lip or tongue immediately afterwards is from the anaesthetic and wears off. Numbness that is still there the next day must be reported to us.
The first week
First 24 hours
Bite on the gauze until the bleeding slows. Do not rinse, spit forcefully, smoke, or drink alcohol. Sleep with an extra pillow.
Days 2 to 3
Swelling often peaks. Use the pain relief you were advised to use. Start gentle warm salt-water rinses after 24 hours.
Call us if
Call us if bleeding will not stop with 20 minutes of firm pressure, swelling is still increasing after day three, you feel unwell, or pain suddenly worsens a few days later after it had improved. That later pain can be a dry socket, and it needs a visit.

Expected effects
Pain, swelling, bruising and limited opening are expected and settle.
Dry socket
A dry socket is a painful interruption in healing. It is more common if you smoke.
The nerve
Lower wisdom teeth can sit close to the nerve that supplies feeling to the lower lip, chin and tongue. Injury can cause tingling or numbness. It is uncommon, it is usually temporary, and it can be permanent. We talk about this before you consent, using your own X-ray.
The sinus
An upper wisdom tooth can leave a communication with the sinus. We check for that before you leave.

Does wisdom teeth removal hurt?
The procedure is carried out under local anaesthetic, so you should feel pressure rather than pain. Some soreness and swelling afterwards is normal for a few days, and we give you clear aftercare and pain-relief advice.
How long does recovery take after wisdom tooth extraction?
Most patients recover within 3 to 5 days. Initial swelling and tenderness peak around Day 2 and subside quickly. You can usually return to normal work or school within 24–48 hours.
What is an impacted wisdom tooth?
An impacted wisdom tooth is one that cannot erupt properly because it is blocked by bone or another tooth, or growing at an angle. Impacted teeth can cause pain, infection, or damage adjacent teeth if left untreated.
Do all wisdom teeth need to be extracted?
Not at all. If your wisdom teeth are healthy, fully erupted, correctly positioned, and easy to clean, they do not need to be removed. We only recommend extraction when wisdom teeth cause pain, infection, or crowding.
How much does wisdom tooth removal cost?
A specialist assessment with our oral surgeon is £90. X-rays are extra if needed: a panoramic X-ray is £50 and a 3D CBCT scan from £125. Surgical extractions start from £395, and an impacted wisdom tooth from £495 per tooth. You get a written quote before any treatment.
