Lost a filling or crown?
Quick answer
What should I do if a filling or crown falls out?
Keep the crown if you have it, avoid chewing on that side, and call York House Dental Practice in West Byfleet on 01932 348864.
A lost filling or crown is not usually an emergency unless it hurts, but it should be seen within days — the exposed tooth can break or decay quickly. Pharmacy temporary filling material can cover the gap short term. Never use superglue or household adhesive.
What you need to know
If a crown comes off intact and the tooth underneath is sound, it can often be cleaned and recemented. If the crown keeps coming off, there may be decay underneath or too little tooth left to hold it, and a new crown (from £795) or a post may be needed.
A lost filling can leave a sharp edge and sensitivity to cold. Sugar-free gum or pharmacy wax over a sharp edge can protect your tongue for a day or two. Replacement white fillings start from £175.
If the tooth is painful, swollen or has broken as well, book an emergency assessment (from £78). See dental crowns, white fillings and broken tooth first aid.
