Does having a tooth removed hurt?
Quick answer
Does having a tooth taken out hurt?
The extraction itself should not hurt. York House Dental Practice in West Byfleet numbs the tooth thoroughly with local anaesthetic, so you feel pressure and pushing but not sharp pain.
Soreness for two or three days afterwards is normal and usually managed with over-the-counter pain relief. Simple extractions start from £190, surgical extractions from £395.
What you need to know
We check the area is fully numb before starting and stop if you feel anything sharp. A simple extraction often takes only a few minutes. Teeth that are broken, curved or impacted may need a small surgical procedure, which takes longer but is still done under local anaesthetic.
If you are anxious, tell us when booking. We can allow extra time, explain each step, and discuss sedation for longer or more difficult extractions.
Pain that gets worse after day two or three may be dry socket and should be checked. See extraction aftercare, dry socket and tooth extractions.
