Does teeth whitening work on crowns, veneers & fillings?
Quick answer
Will teeth whitening lighten dental crowns, veneers, or white fillings?
No. Professional teeth whitening gels (hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide) only whiten natural tooth enamel; they cannot change the shade of dental porcelain, ceramic crowns, veneers, or composite fillings.
At York House Dental Practice in West Byfleet, whitening treatments start from £425 for Boutique home trays and £635 for Enlighten.
What you need to know
Because porcelain and composite resins are non-porous synthetic materials, bleaching agents pass through without altering their pigments. If you whiten teeth that already have visible white fillings or crowns, the surrounding enamel will lighten, making older restorations appear darker or yellow by comparison.
The clinically recommended protocol is to whiten your natural teeth first to your target shade. After whitening concludes, we allow two weeks for the shade and bond strength to stabilise before replacing old front fillings (from £175) or crowns (from £795) to match your new brighter shade.
During your whitening consultation, our dentists inspect every existing restoration and provide an honest assessment of whether any visible fillings or crowns will need updating.
